REquirements Capture with Crowdbotics Maintaining or modernizing legacy codebases is a tedious, error-prone process. The Crowdbotics platform uses AI to help you speed through the hardest part – reverse engineering requirements and technical specifications from your code. Go From Code to Specs with AI The Crowdbotics platform leverages an advanced processing pipeline, built around Azure OpenAI, to reverse engineer high-quality, comprehensive business requirements from your legacy codebase. Additionally, the platform generates valuable technical documentation, helping you navigate your codebase. Requirements Matter Tools for inspecting legacy codebases have been around for a while. These tools can help you understand how the code is organized and highlight security vulnerabilities. In other words, they help you understand how the code works, but not what the code is supposed to do and why it was created in the first place. In order to maintain or modernize an existing codebase, you must be able to answer the what and why questions. Without understanding the business requirements, you’ll never know if the updated code works as intended. The technical documentation provides a roadmap, but the business requirements give you the actual destination. Process code in days, Not months Typically, modernization projects are staffed by huge teams that manually scan through the code line-by-line. This approach is laborious, expensive, time-intensive, and fraught with inaccuracies. Most projects take months, and some, years. The incredible intelligence of LLMs are a game-changer when it comes to processing legacy code. However, on their own, LLMs can only process small batches of...

Requirements Management with Crowdbotics The Crowdbotics platform helps you ensure your apps deliver against your business requirements - even when those requirements are constantly changing. Keep them updated and in sync automatically with Crowdbotics. Modify and Manage Requirements AS You Go The needs of your business change continuously. Updating legacy apps to conform to these needs — along with addressing technical debt — are the primary drivers for app modernization projects. After a product requirements document (aka PRD) has been generated from your legacy codebase, the Crowdbotics platform provides you with tools to help you modify and manage the business requirements attached to your modernization project. Stakeholders can directly edit requirements, manually add new requirements (including users stories and acceptance criteria), and use AI to suggest and refine new requirements. Maintain Compliance with Technical and Business Standards The Crowdbotics platform enables your development managers and architects to capture technical standards and policies that apply across the entire portfolio of applications. These might be preferred development languages and frameworks, standard cloud services for functions such as structure data, secrets and authentication. These also might include governance, compliance or regulatory rules. For instance, a healthcare organization in the US must adhere to HIPAA rules for any application that include patient data. Other apps, like an employee expenses management system, wouldn’t require HIPAA compliance.   These enterprise standards and policy apply as a context overlay on top of the application specific business requirement in the PRD. This ensures the modernized solution meets all...

Requirements-Driven Development with Crowdbotics The only thing worse than building nothing is building the wrong thing. Crowdbotics helps you ensure that your business requirements are reflected in every line of code you write. The Crowdbotics platform guarantees that what the business needs is exactly what gets built. Use Your Requirements Wherever Your Teams Build The Crowdbotics platform makes it easy to share requirements with the teams responsible, whether they are updating an existing app or building a completely new version. The platform is extensible and easily plugs into existing project management tooling such as Jira. It also includesa chat interface that enables team members to interactively query the business and technical requirements. Get More Out of Your Code Generation Tools In addition to sharing requirements with developers and testers, Crowdbotics can share business and technical requirements as context directly with a code generation tool such as GitHub Copilot. When you feed all of this critical context into your code generation tool, the accuracy and effectiveness of code generation skyrockets. In fact, in a joint study with Microsoft and GitHub, developers using this requirements-driven approach saw the effectiveness of their code generation tools increase by more than 50%. It turns out that spending the time to reverse engineer business requirements from your legacy code base not only improves planning and testing. Requirements-driven development has a profoundly positive impact on the development process as well.   Read the White Paper

What really defines successful modernization? Understanding the business objectives of a modernization project is often the missing piece.

Modernization Is Not Just About Technology Most modernization efforts miss the mark because they solve the wrong problem. Many teams focus on swapping out tech stacks, migrating to the cloud, or using black-box tools like transpilers. While these steps might upgrade your infrastructure, they don’t address the real issue: how the app can support your business's evolving demands. All too often, teams invest time and money into technical updates that fail to deliver real business value. When Modernization Misses Business Goals The ultimate measure of a modernization initiative’s success is whether the updated application meets the actual business requirements. This means that the key to success is developing a comprehensive understanding of what those business requirements actually are, and then ensuring that those requirements are reflected in every line of newly written code. The Hidden Complexity of Business Requirements The biggest barrier to successful modernization isn’t the technology—it’s the complexity of understanding and managing business requirements: Massive Data Sets: Modern apps operate in environments where requirements span thousands of features, dependencies, and edge cases. Human Limitations: The “human context window” is too small to fully capture, interpret, and manage these requirements. Uncertain Results: Even after rearchitecting, teams often find that the new system doesn’t solve the original problem because the requirements weren’t fully understood or implemented. The AI Advantage AI may not be perfect for everything, but it outperforms humans when it comes to understanding and communicating complex systems—making it ideal for solving the challenges of modernization: Faster Discovery: AI...

> Most modernizations fail. Here's why.

- Published: 2024-12-02
- Modified: 2024-12-04

Most modernizations fail. Here's why.

Modernization is a High-Stakes Effort Applications targeted for modernization aren’t peripheral tools—they're the backbone of your business. These strategic, line-of-business apps drive critical operations, revenue, and customer experiences. Organizations know the cost of failure: lost opportunities, wasted investments, and a widening gap between them and their competitors. When these projects stumble, the consequences ripple across the business. Outdated, Overgrown, and Overwhelming Over years or decades, legacy systems get patched, extended, and duct-taped together to meet immediate needs. The results? Layered complexity that makes even small changes risky Inflexible architecture that can’t scale or adapt to new business requirements A black box that makes it a challenge to even understand how the system works Every step in the modernization process reveals another knot to untangle, slowing down progress and driving up costs. Where’s the Documentation? One of the first steps in modernization is understanding what the application does and how it works. Unfortunately, for most legacy systems, that information simply doesn’t exist. Teams are therefore forced to painstakingly investigate old code, reverse-engineering its functionality to uncover what’s mission-critical. This process is slow, manual, and error-prone—modernization becomes less like software engineering and more like archaeology. Failure Is The Norm Modernization is a balancing act between technical complexity and business needs. Most teams lack the tools and processes to manage either effectively, let alone both at once, leading to all-too-common failure states: Underestimated Complexity: Teams dive in without fully grasping the scale of dependencies and risks. Misaligned Goals: Business leaders and developers often...

On Apr 23, 2024, Crowdbotics announced a new collaboration with Microsoft to help customers accelerate enterprise application development with AI and CodeOps. Driving this collaboration is the fact that every day the need for new applications increases at a breakneck pace. However, in spite of the growing demand, most organization’s capacity to build new applications lags far behind what's needed. The irony is that, within each organization, there are millions, if not billions, of lines of code available for reuse if only there was a systematic way to enable this. The solution to this problem, CodeOps, is precisely what Crowdbotics brings to the table. At the same time, when it comes to accelerating the development of new lines of code, Microsoft is unrivaled. For decades Visual Studio has been the gold standard for software development. Over four times as many developers use Visual Studio as compared to the second most popular IDE. The same leadership applies when it comes to GitHub, and most recently, Microsoft has established itself as the de facto standard in generative AI-based programming with GitHub Copilot. Microsoft and Crowdbotics: Better Together By combining the efficiency of developing new code that Microsoft has perfected with the efficiency of reusing existing code that Crowdbotics has pioneered, customers benefit from the best of both worlds - achieving unmatched efficiency and capacity to build new applications - for the cloud, web, mobile, desktop or IOT. This complementary approach – using AI to enable code reuse as well as using AI...

THE BLACK HOLE OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT For application development projects, a typical cause of failure is the black hole that often exists between business stakeholders and the development team. This black hole exists because business stakeholders communicate in terms of outcomes while developers communicate in terms of modules, components, hierarchy, and algorithms. Business stakeholders describe solutions using english and common linguistic structure, while developers describe solutions in terms of code.   More importantly, the vehicle for bridging the gap between these two teams, the product requirements document (PRD) is often overlooked or poorly executed. Invariably, required outcomes are insufficiently described, leaving the developers to interpret, or worse, guess, at what the stakeholders need. Key assumptions are left out and major steps are skipped. The PRD becomes the weak link, resulting in the delivered application wildly missing the expectations of those who commissioned it. At the end of the day, the success or failure of a project rests on the quality of the PRD.   THE CROWDBOTICS APPROACH TO PLANNING  At Crowdbotics, we understand the criticality of quality PRDs to the overall success of any development project. We also recognize that successful code reuse initiatives start long before coding starts. One of the foundational principles of CodeOps is that code reuse begins with the definition of requirements. To help ensure your success, we've revolutionized the PRD creation process. By embracing the power of the latest AI technology, gone are the days of laboriously documenting each feature – an iterative, tedious process...

- URL: https://crowdbotics.com/platform/assemble/

ASSEMBLING MODULES INTO APPS  The third key pillar of the Crowdbotics platform is Assembly-AI. This critical feature takes the modules identified by Match-AI, and configures those modules into a nearly complete application. Assembly-AI, like the other main pillars of the platform, relies on the latest generation of AI technology. It ensures that all of the modules are properly included in a project. More importantly, Assembly-AI ensures developers spend as little time dealing with redundant code and toil as possible. Instead, developers get to innovate and focus on delivering new, differentiated and valuable code that makes the difference to your company’s success. MODULES FOR THE WIN  A module is simply a self-contained piece code designed to be reused. In its simplest form, modules are structured as a set of files and folders, written in a specific programming language (e. g. JavaScript) and dependent on specific frameworks (e. g. React Native). Modules can contain code implementing any part of an application. For example, libraries will likely have modules for the following:  User Interface — modules can implement complete screens (e. g. login screen, order form) as well as UI elements (e. g. page header, map). Connectors — modules can implement code that connects an app to back-end services (e. g. tax calculation service) or to systems of record (e. g. SAP, Salesforce).   Policies & Config — modules can implement code that sets policy and configuration options for other installed modules (e. g. setting an API key for a service implemented in...

MATCHING WITH THE CROWDBOTICS PLATFORM  One of the pillars of the Crowdbotics platform and one of the keys to enabling a CodeOps practice is the ability to match requirements with existing code. No matter how unique an application, there will invariably be some code that has already been written elsewhere. It might be as simple as an authentication dialog, or it might be for access to a particular database. For many applications, up to 70% of the code can be sourced from reusable code modules, but nearly every application can benefit from at least some existing code.   There are four key elements that make up the mechanics of identifying reusable code:  Included in the platform are libraries in which reusable code is available for reuse.   The reusable code is stored in the libraries as ‘modules’. The Match-AI function of the platform identifies modules that fulfill requirements.   The requirements used by Match-AI come from the PRD that was generated by PRD-AI. As a foundation of the matching process, it’s evident why improving the quality of PRDs is so pivotal to the success of a CodeOps practice. However, while high-quality PRDs are necessary, they are not sufficient by themselves. A centralized repository for the code as well as a mechanism to match requirements with code are also required.   LIBRARIES  There are two types of libraries:  There is a public Crowdbotics library accessible to any Crowdbotics platform user. The code modules in the public library come from Crowdbotics and our...

THE CODEOPS MANIFESTO In the dynamic world of software development, we stand at the cusp of a new era, an era where efficiency, innovation, and sustainability in coding practices are not just ideals, but necessities. We introduce CodeOps - a philosophy, a methodology, a revolution. It's more than a practice; it's a commitment to excellence and foresight in the software development process. This manifesto outlines the core principles of CodeOps, a clarion call for the future of software development. We Believe Code is not disposable, it should be reused as much as possible. Code reuse isn’t just a development problem, it starts as soon as the requirements are considered.   4 Core Tenets of CodeOps  Embrace and Extend Existing Code: Recognize the vast repository of existing code as a primary resource. Prioritize reusing and modularizing this code, viewing every project as an opportunity to build upon what already exists. This approach fosters efficiency, reduces redundancy, and accelerates development. Harmonious Integration with DevOps: CodeOps is an evolution, not a revolution. It seamlessly integrates with existing DevOps practices, enhancing them without disruption. It leverages current infrastructure and workflows, ensuring a natural and progressive adoption for DevOps practitioners. Balanced Innovation with AI and Human Ingenuity: While AI is a valuable tool for generating code, the heart of CodeOps lies in the synergy between AI capabilities and human creativity. This balance ensures that AI is used not as a crutch, but as a catalyst for innovation and efficiency. Success Starts with the Idea not...

COMPLETING YOUR APP  The final step of using the Crowdbotics platform is to take the nearly completed app generated by Assembly-AI and add any remaining required code. This step completes the journey of idea to app. With a library well stocked with code modules, the amount of remaining code can be small. This means that developers can take great care in coding the features that will have the most impact – the unique, truly differentiated code that drives the highest business impact.   Since the Crowdbotics platform is built around real code, developers can use their IDE of choice to complete their application. More importantly, developers can leverage all their existing skills with languages, frameworks and architecture. Unlike the walled garden approach of low- and no-code platforms, the Crowdbotics platform is designed to integrate seamlessly with all your existing DevOps (and DevSecOps) investments, process and culture.   GETTING THE MOST OF GEN AI We built the Crowdbotics platform so you don’t have to use generative AI to create code that already exists. Even though Gen AI creates code at unprecedented speed, it cannot yet guarantee that the resulting code passes all functional, security, resiliency and scaling tests. Reusing existing code that has been validated is always preferable to using Gen AI to recreate the wheel, and that’s what the Crowdbotics platform helps you achieve. On the other hand, when it comes to adding the new, unique code that isn’t available as a code module, or creating new code modules to...

Hear from Charath Ram Ranganathan, CTO of Crowdbotics, on how the company is transforming software development by turning code into actionable intelligence—streamlining legacy modernization, developer onboarding, and compliance documentation.

In today’s complex software landscape, organizations face challenges such as maintaining legacy systems, onboarding new engineers efficiently, and meeting compliance requirements. Traditional tools often fall short in providing the deep understanding teams need to navigate these issues effectively. Cory Hymel, VP of Product and Research at Crowdbotics, recently presented “Using Prediction Machines to Build Intelligence,” where he examined the limitations of large language models and defined a roadmap to true enterprise intelligence.

The AI Hype vs. Reality: Context is Not Intelligence The current AI landscape is saturated with promises that large language models (LLMs) can magically solve business problems by simply consuming vast amounts of data. This marketing narrative has driven widespread expectations that feeding AI more context leads directly to intelligence and productivity gains. However, this is a fundamental misconception. LLMs, at their core, are prediction machines designed to statistically guess the next word in a sequence based on probability patterns. They excel at pattern matching but lack true understanding or reasoning. Current LLMs struggle with the vast amounts of information needed to modernize legacy systems, which can involve millions of lines of code. While expensive fine-tuning offers some improvement, expanding context windows or datasets has limitations and doesn't lead to true intelligence. https://youtu. be/Rs4sCal5D08? feature=shared Building Real Intelligence: Introducing Intelligence Models To overcome these limitations, Crowdbotics is pioneering intelligence models that work alongside LLMs. These models capture structured knowledge, business logic, and reasoning patterns—encoding not only what the code does, but why it does it. Rather than relying solely on probabilistic pattern matching, intelligence models provide deterministic, consistent, and explainable insights aligned with business context. This architecture enables AI-driven tools to deliver meaningful, reliable outcomes in software modernization, maintenance, and developer productivity. In collaboration with GitHub and Microsoft, Crowdbotics demonstrated that integrating intelligence models with GitHub Copilot improved code suggestion acceptance rates by 51%—a testament to the power of adding true intelligence to generative AI. Why This Matters: The Growing...

The short version: AI held its own and even outperformed humans in some areas of requirements engineering.

I’ve been building custom software in a services capacity for the better part of two decades. With varying roles from founder, engineer, solutions architect and consultant—you name it, I've seen my share of projects.   As many know, any project starts with trying to understand what the customer wants and translating it into requirements you can build from. As many people may not know, this requirement-gathering portion is ALWAYS the first thing that gets compressed, prioritized, defunded or otherwise bastardized. Regardless of the project size, you always try to start with two sprints dedicated to requirements. Oftentimes, projects of medium complexity bleed into three sprints, with larger projects taking four+ sprints.   This is the i-d-e-a-l case, meaning you have plenty of time to iterate with the customer and really nail down what they want.   However, if you’re an SE/PM/PjM/BA reading this, you know that never happens. It ALWAYS gets compressed down the shortest possible timeframe because customers “know what they want,” with account reps trying to lower the price to win the deal. Bollocks.   LLMs, with their vast array of Jedi force-like knowledge, offer a great way to help speed up requirements gathering and definition. They’ve scored well on language tests, performed great on coding challenges and can pass bar exams. So, how well do they actually do at creating software requirements as compared to a human expert? How well do these infant technologies stack up against grizzled experts? That’s the question we wanted to ask and...

From the days of punch cards to the sleek touchscreens of today, the history of computing is a testament to our relentless pursuit of a more straightforward way to interact with machines. By Charath Ranganathan, CTO at Crowdbotics From the days of punch cards to the sleek touchscreens of today, the history of computing is a testament to our relentless pursuit of a more straightforward way to interact with machines. User interfaces (UI) and user experience (UX) have continuously evolved, becoming more intuitive and user-friendly with each iteration.   But what about the code that powers these interfaces?   Here, too, the story is one of ongoing simplification. Programming interfaces, or the languages and tools developers use, have undergone a similar transformation. Traditionally, programmers-the engineers, developers, and coders who build our digital world-have wielded a specialized skillset. Over time, the complexity of programming in low-level languages like Assembly was replaced by "simpler" languages like COBOL, which was supposedly designed for business users, and more recently, fourth-generation languages (4GLs) to streamline specific tasks.   Integrated development environments (IDEs) further aided programmers by automating repetitive tasks. Despite these efforts, programming has typically remained a domain reserved mainly for individuals with the specialized skills to interact with computers via programming languages. A New Future Has Arrived Today, the landscape is shifting dramatically thanks to the rise of generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs). Last year, GitHub reported that 92% of developers already used AI tools. The development of GenAI-powered programming marks a watershed moment in the history of computing because they have the potential to abstract much of the inherent syntactic complexity involved in traditional programming.   Instead of writing code line by line, we have...

The world has endless moral quandaries, and AI is just the latest. Should we adopt it, and in what capacity? How can it contribute to safety and security?

By Cory Hymel, VP of Innovation and Research at Crowdbotics The world has endless moral quandaries, and AI is just the latest. Should we adopt it, and in what capacity? How can it contribute to safety and security?   Frank Chen asked a question five years ago, when self-driving car technology became feasible: “If self-driving cars are 51% safer, are we not morally obligated to adopt them? ” This question has repeatedly sparked debate, and every person who hears it instantly thinks they know the answer one way or the other. The knife’s edge makes this question so interesting—51% is hardly a runaway statistic.   However, let’s do the math. The National Highway Safety Administration reported that in 2022, there were an estimated 42,795 traffic fatalities. One percent of that number, the difference that self-driving cars would hypothetically make, is about 427 people. That number would fill around 1. 5 Boeing 777 airplanes.   Are 427 lives enough to qualify as a moral obligation to adopt AI?   Though there is no simple answer, and the debate is not open and shut, the answer is yes. The opportunity to save lives, enhance the quality of life, and address long-standing inequality is significant and incontrovertible. That doesn’t mean the argument isn’t complicated, and the technology is not done developing.   Adopting AI or any tech too hastily can lead to many issues, making this debate hotly contested even as the technology improves. However, avoiding technology that could save lives may be...

LLMs are redefining the software lifecycle, but robust requirements remain key to success.

LLMs are redefining the software lifecycle, but robust requirements remain key to success. AI, specifically large language models (LLMs), fundamentally changes software development. Those who have followed this trend have seen LLMs weave their way into every aspect of the development process, from the initial planning stages through maintenance and beyond. When you look at the characteristics of successful software projects, one constant is solid requirements engineering. It’s like building a house — without a proper foundation and blueprint, even the most skilled builders will struggle. Effective requirements engineering creates the essential roadmap that guides the entire development journey. Think of requirements engineering as the backbone of the whole operation. It’s not just about noting what the software needs to do; it’s a systematic process that helps define, document, and adapt requirements as the project evolves. In today’s fast-paced development environment, having this structured approach is more critical than ever. The Importance of an Upfront Investment in Requirements In traditional development cycles, the requirements phase is often the first to face time or budget cuts. Still, industry trends indicate a growing recognition of its importance, particularly for modernization projects. Investing in robust requirements engineering can dramatically reduce overall project costs and timelines, enabling faster iterations and improved outcomes. Why has requirements-gathering historically been deprioritized in software development? First, there is constant pressure to deliver faster, better, and cheaper solutions. In this environment, reducing the scope of requirements gathering allows teams to compress project timelines. For instance, what might have been a six-week...

As generative AI continues to advance, it will impact every phase of the software development process, not least the role of humans.

As generative AI continues to advance, it will impact every phase of the software development process, not least the role of humans. Considering the scaling history and trajectory of generative AI models (specifically large language models, or LLMs) specialized for coding, the software development life cycle (SDLC) is ripe for disruption. Not because we’re all going to be replaced by machines, but because there are so many areas in the SDLC that are perfect fits for AI and again, more specifically, LLMs. In a recent whitepaper, we at Crowdbotics explored what a ground-up revamp of the SDLC would look like with AI designed in from the start. To do this, we made three bold assumptions about the future: Code generation would become near instantaneous and free.   Natural language would evolve into the primary programming interface.   Humans would act as verifiers rather than doers. We were also keenly interested in understanding the tangential impact of AI on the SDLC beyond just hands-on keyboards. To do that, we looked at five key aspects that surround, are controlled by, and will ultimately be influenced by the future SDLC: Speed: The two-week sprint is dead. Teams: Humans shift from creation to verification. Intelligence: Knowledge capture and access become automated. Resources: Global development teams form a relay. Consumption: Demand for software surges. Looking at the broader impact of AI in the SDLC beyond the hype of “coding is dead” is crucial because it opens so many new doors of possibility, exploration, disruption, and, ultimately, opportunity. Here we’ll briefly discuss...

This extension provides a simpler method to invoke an AI platform that Crowdbotics created to convert plain language descriptions of applications into a requirements document.

Crowdbotics today made available an extension for GitHub Copilot that makes it simpler to generate code using higher-quality requirements documents. Unveiled at the GitHub Universe 2024 conference, this extension provides a simpler method to invoke an AI platform that Crowdbotics created to convert plain language descriptions of applications into a requirements document. Application developers can then use those documents to create code using the GitHub Copilot generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool that is based on large language models (LLMs) originally developed by OpenAI. Cory Hymel, vice president of research and innovation for Crowdbotics, said the overall goal is to increase the amount of AI-generated code that is actually accepted by application developers. An ongoing GUMDROP study of that code being conducted by Crowdbotics, GitHub and Microsoft finds the Crowdbotics platform improved the code suggestion acceptance rate for GitHub Copilot by 14%, representing a 51% relative improvement. Additionally, the study found that developers using this multi-model configuration were 25% more likely to succeed at feature development than developers who did not use any kind of AI tool. Arguably, the biggest single challenge application development teams regularly encounter are requirements documents that in one way or another wind up being seriously flawed. Developers then often find they need to rework large segments of code simply because the original requirements document contained errors or did not account for some piece of critical functionality. Crowdbotics has developed a platform that leverages AI to ensure higher quality requirements documents that can then be used to define technical...

Given that GitHub Copilot is proving to be invaluable to developers, is there untapped potential for connecting Copilot’s suggestions directly with PRD insights — helping it to be not only more powerful, but also more accurate? The answer is a very definitive yes.

For developers, the pressure is always mounting to build code more and more quickly and efficiently. AI has been improving drastically year over year mainly due to increasing training data corpus and increasing compute — and AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot have revolutionized how we work by offering rapid, in-line suggestions that turbocharge workflows and boost productivity off the charts.   Researchers and companies are exploring new ways to improve AI by getting multiple AI systems, or "agents," to work together toward a shared goal. This approach, called Multi-Agent systems, means combining different AI models so that they can each contribute based on their unique strengths. And it’s been shown to be much more effective for complex tasks than using just one model. In software development. research has already shown that multi-agent AI systems can produce good results. Academic research (like the ChatDev chat-powered software development framework) and some companies (like Devon) have tested this idea.   Up until now, it hasn’t been common to see "multi-agent" AI setups being widely used in commercial products for software development. But all that is changing.   In part, that’s because speed isn’t the only goal of a developer — especially if that acceleration is speeding the work in the wrong direction. A suggestion that is misaligned with requirements can actually set the project back.   At Crowdbotics, we’re deeply familiar with the difference a well-crafted product requirements document (“PRD”) makes. By establishing a solid PRD, business stakeholders’ needs can be communicated clearly and...

This new capability significantly improves the acceptance rate of Copilot suggestions.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Oct. 29, 2024 - Crowdbotics, pioneer of CodeOps as the new standard methodology for software development, today released an extension for GitHub Copilot, available now through the GitHub and Azure Marketplaces. The Crowdbotics platform uses AI to help business stakeholders and IT collaborate and generate high-quality requirements definitions for application development projects. The platform further uses AI to turn these business requirements into technical requirements and implementation recommendations. The new Crowdbotics extension for GitHub Copilot takes advantage of all the requirements and context in the Crowdbotics platform to help developers generate more accurate code with Copilot. Integrated with GitHub Copilot Chat, the extension enables developers to benefit from this accuracy improvement without ever having to leave their development environment.   A recent joint research study conducted by Crowdbotics, GitHub, and Microsoft using a subset of the Crowdbotics extension features, found that injecting business requirements from Crowdbotics PRD AI into GitHub Copilot’s neighboring tab context model, improved GitHub Copilot code suggestion acceptance rate by 14%. This change reflects a 51% relative improvement in the acceptance rate. Additionally, the study found that developers using this multi-model configuration were 25% more likely to succeed at feature development than non-AI assisted developers. The now-publicly available Crowdbotics extension has this feature built in, along with a number of other additional features to help developers stay “in flow” longer.   “The Crowdbotics extension for GitHub Copilot achieves what both GitHub and Crowdbotics aim to do: improve developers' lives by making their code smarter...

Crowdbotics GitHub Copilot Extension—a powerful add-on that enhances Copilot’s performance by feeding it with richer, project-specific context.

Developers know that the difference between clean, efficient code and a patchwork of spaghetti logic usually comes down to one thing: a good set of requirements. If you’ve ever stared at a block of code generated by GitHub Copilot and thought, “This... isn’t quite what I needed,” — or worse, gotten feedback from a business stakeholder or peer review that the code wasn’t quite what THEY needed — you’re certainly not alone.   GitHub Copilot is an incredible tool that is transforming the way developers write code, offering intelligent suggestions, generating code, and dramatically speeding up development. But its success is dependent on starting with the right context — without it there is always the danger of sending the AI off on a wild code chase. Enter the Crowdbotics GitHub Copilot Extension—a powerful add-on that enhances Copilot’s performance by feeding it with richer, project-specific context. By seamlessly integrating your project’s requirements (in the form of Product Requirement Documents a. k. a. PRDs) into Copilot’s workflow, this Extension ensures that every code suggestion Copilot generates is far more likely to be technically correct but also adheres to business requirements, enterprise standards, and regulatory frameworks.   Have we got your attention? Let’s jump behind the scenes to explore how the Extension makes GitHub Copilot smarter. Spoiler: With this extension, you’ll spend less time rewriting code and more time building something that works. The Challenge: Bridging Business and Technical Requirements Copilot is a game-changer, with its near-magical ability to generate code suggestions on the...

Crowdbotics has announced the introduction of five new capabilities to its AI-powered application development platform. These capabilities address a variety of challenges that many enterprises face throughout the software development lifecycle.

Crowdbotics has announced the introduction of five new capabilities to its AI-powered application development platform. These capabilities address a variety of challenges that many enterprises face throughout the software development lifecycle. The enhancements aim to overcome several critical issues. A significant problem is that 70% of development projects fail due to poor or incomplete requirements. Inconsistent architectural decisions across technology portfolios also decelerate application delivery. Furthermore, the inability to accurately forecast cloud costs for new applications fosters uncertainty and risk. The new capabilities aim to tackle these specific challenges. Launched in January 2024, the Crowdbotics platform leverages generative AI to automate the entire software development process. From converting business requirements into engineering specifications to defining technology architecture and generating starter code, the platform facilitates an accelerated and efficient development cycle. The first step in using the platform involves generating a comprehensive Product Requirement Document (PRD). Utilising generative AI, Crowdbotics can transform a basic textual prompt into a detailed PRD that bridges the gap between business stakeholders' needs and engineering specifications. This process aims to accelerate development while reducing the associated risks. Among the newly introduced features is the Enterprise Context capability. This allows IT leaders and architects to set common corporate standards and policies at the beginning of a project. These can include specifics on development languages, frameworks, preferred APIs, and cloud services, as well as regulatory and compliance requirements. Enterprise Context thus ensures consistency and enhances the speed and accuracy of the PRD creation process. Another feature, Technical Recommendations,...

Crowdbotics, pioneer of CodeOps as the new standard methodology for software development, is adding new capabilities to its AI-powered application development platform, aimed at addressing the most significant challenges in the application development industry. The new capabilities within the Crowdbotics platform aim to address critical business and technological issues, according to the company. Crowdbotics is continuously releasing new capabilities for its platform and the company is announcing the release of the following: Enterprise Context: Enterprise Context enables IT leaders and architects to define common corporate standards and policies that are applied during the creation of a new product requirements document (PRD). These can include the specification of development languages, frameworks, preferred APIs, cloud services, as well as regulatory and compliance requirements that must be enforced as common standards across applications. Enterprise Context ensures consistency and predictability across applications and improves the accuracy and speed of the PRD creation process. Technical Recommendations: Once a project’s requirements are locked, the platform’s Technical Recommendations feature utilizes AI to decompose the requirements into functional specifications that include architectural and design recommendations. For instance, for each requirement in a PRD, Technical Recommendations will segment the implementation of the feature into recommended front-end, back-end, and data architectures. Furthermore, Technical Recommendations—considering an organization’s Enterprise Context—generates a list of suggested services and third-party APIs to implement the required capability. Application Code Generation: Complementing the new Technical Recommendations feature, Application Code Generation uses all the contextual information from the PRD, from Enterprise Context, and from Technical Recommendations to generate...

Taking a strategic approach to generative AI, new platform features dramatically lighten the load for developers and application development teams .

Crowdbotics uses AI to accelerate every step of the software development life cycle (SDLC)--starting with ensuring every project is built on the most solid foundation possible. Perhaps the most pivotal step in the SDLC–the creation of high-quality product requirement documents (PRDs)--has long been an underinvested step. Given this, it’s no wonder that the number one reason software development projects fail is poor or missing project requirements. Crowdbotics began changing this dynamic with the introduction of PRD-AI at the beginning of 2024. We use an LLM to ensure that every PRD comprehensively expresses the business requirements. Furthermore, this approach ensures that the requirements are detailed enough to ensure developers clearly understand the stakeholder’s intent. It turns out that bridging the historical chasm between business and IT is a perfect application for generative AI. Also introduced in January, our platform uses the PRD to identify reusable code modules. Customers can curate a private library of code, and they have access to public modules curated by Crowdbotics. Once a module has been identified as being useful, the platform automatically installs the module into the project repository. By systematically utilizing reusable code, the Crowdbotics platform is able to deliver enormous productivity boosts for teams building large portfolios of apps, and this is all made possible by using AI to match requirements in the PRD with the functionality associated with cataloged code modules. It turns out that the context contained in a PRD that enables matching code modules can also be used to power AI-based...

A host of exciting, new features greatly expand the capabilities of the Crowdbotics platform and solve common challenges for IT teams.

Crowdbotics uses AI to accelerate every step of the software development life cycle (SDLC)--starting with using AI to generate high-quality project requirements and progressing all the way through to deployment and monitoring. Today we’re announcing a broad set of features that improve different aspects of the SDLC. Taken together, these features greatly advance our goal of helping customers build apps faster and with less risk. There is a separate blog discussing the Technical Recommendations and Application Code Generation Features that can be found here. This blog covers some additional, important features also being delivered today. Enterprise Context PRD-AI, one of the foundational features of the Crowdbotics platform, uses AI to help business stakeholders generate high-quality product requirements documents (PRDs). PRD-AI ensures that every PRD comprehensively catalogs all of the business requirements, and those requirements are expressed with sufficient fidelity to ensure developers can infer the technical implementation without guessing at the stakeholder’s intent. The requirements generated by PRD-AI are specific to a single application. What about requirements that are common across a broad portfolio of applications? This is where the new Enterprise Context feature comes in. Enterprise Context enables IT leaders and architects to define common corporate standards and policies that are applied when creating a new product requirements document (PRD). These can include the specification of development languages, frameworks, preferred APIs, cloud services, and regulatory and compliance requirements that must be enforced as common standards across applications. Examples include specifying that all front-end development should be done with Java...

Cory Hymel, our VP of Innovation, recently sat down with Stephen Conneely, QE Lead from Fidelity Investments, to discuss exactly how AI is being applied to QE.

As someone deeply immersed in the world of software development, I’m always fascinated by how new technologies can streamline different processes in the development lifecycle and elevate every aspect of how we work.   Quality engineering (QE) is no exception. I recently sat down with Stephen Conneely, QE Lead from Fidelity Investments, to discuss exactly how AI is being applied to QE — something I must admit, I didn’t know much about. He had some amazing insight. One of the biggest shifts in QE over the past decade, Stephen told us, has been the process of "shifting left" — or bringing quality assurance into the earliest stages of development. Stephen explained: "What we mean by that is not breaking the code but ensuring it's built correctly in the first place. We’re putting in processes to ensure high quality from the very beginning. " This is a significant shift in how we think about QE — moving away from catching bugs after the fact and instead focusing on embedding quality directly into the DNA of the software as it's being created.   Stephen explained how AI is also helping QE teams better manage an overwhelming volume of work — a volume that has only been increasing as developers use AI tools like GitHub and PRD-AI to turn out applications faster. There's just too much data, he said to possibly cover it all with manual testing, and AI is a great way to break that potential bottleneck.  "We’re already seeing gains in automating manual...

Cory Hymel, our VP of Innovation and Research, recently caught up with Adam Wilson, the founder of Polyform, to explore how AI is reshaping the design landscape.

What does the future of design look like in a world increasingly shaped by AI? As we wade deeper into the era of artificial intelligence, this is a question I find myself coming back to more and more. AI’s presence in the design space — whether graphic design, 3D design, UX design — has sparked fierce debates about its potential to enhance creativity—or stifle it. From where I sit, we're witnessing one of the most exciting shifts in the industry as AI and spatial computing push the boundaries of what's possible. I recently caught up with Adam Wilson, a longtime friend and the founder of Polyform, to explore how AI is reshaping the design landscape. With a rich background in both industrial and digital design, Adam has been at the forefront of integrating emerging technologies into creative spaces. From his early work with iOS to his deep dive into augmented reality (AR) and spatial computing, Adam has a unique perspective on where design is headed — and AI is a huge part of that future. AI is becoming a powerful tool for creativity, said Adam, a lot like Photoshop when it first came out, but you still need the fundamentals. “Just because I'm good at Photoshop didn't like mean that I was a good designer,” he noted. “I don't know that it's stifling creativity. I would say that it promotes creativity — that's why I'm such a heavy user. But you still need to have those underlying skills to actually use that creativity...

To ensure the highest level of security possible through every step of the development process, organizations should know what CodeOps is, how it works and how it contributes to securing new and developing software.

Software development has become something of a minefield. Across the software development lifecycle, around 60% of U. S. businesses will face security supply chain attacks.  Gartner says this marks a triple-digit increase in such attacks in recent years. To mitigate this, businesses have opted for DevSecOps strategies, gravitating toward principles that implement security protocols into the software as early in the process as possible. With this security mindset, a software development framework tied closely to DevSecOps has emerged: CodeOps. To ensure the highest level of security possible through every step of the development process, organizations should know what CodeOps is, how it works and how it contributes to securing new and developing software. What is CodeOps? CodeOps is a cutting-edge approach to software development that utilizes reusable, internally owned code to streamline the development process. Driven by generative AI (GenAI) and leveraging modular coding, CodeOps expedites development and encourages innovation. With added efficiency and security, digital products can continuously evolve and improve. Large businesses and organizations such as the U. S. Air Force, with high-risk security concerns, have started using this innovative technology to quickly create mission-critical apps and software. Harnessing GenAI to generate code components based on preexisting specifications and utilizing modular coding concepts allow organizations to create reusable and in-house code, which is the base of CodeOps. To most, the most appealing feature is efficiency. Reusable specifications and pre-certified code components allow organizations to reduce a huge portion of development time, ensuring faster time-to-market on digital products. Flexibility ensures...

In our recently published white paper, we proposed a new approach, called the "V-Bounce," that integrates AI into every stage of software development, from the initial planning to the final deployment.

As AI technology becomes more advanced, it's changing how we build software. The traditional Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) is a process used to plan, create, test, and maintain software. But with AI's growing capabilities, we have an opportunity for a new, better way of doing things. In our recently published white paper, we proposed a new approach, called the "V-Bounce," that integrates AI into every stage of software development, from the initial planning to the final deployment. This overview simplifies some of the concepts from that paper. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the AI-Native SDLC, and an in-depth exploration of this new methodology, we invite you to read the full white paper. What is AI-Native? When we say something is "AI-Native," we mean that AI is not just an add-on duct-taped to the process, but is designed to be part of every part of the process from the beginning. For software development, this means using AI to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and innovation in every phase. AI Hits Every Phase of the SDLC AI has the potential to revolutionize every step of the software development process, having impact across engineers, designers, project managers, finance teams, architecture teams, and business stakeholders: Planning: AI can help predict potential problems and resource needs, making planning more proactive. Design: By analyzing data on how users interact with software, AI can suggest design improvements that make the software easier to use. Development: Models can generate and optimize code, ensuring it performs...

We hosted a roundtable with tech executives. These are the top 5 questions they're asking about AI and the top trends we saw.

What a week! The theme of this year’s GDS Digital Innovation Summit was “Digital Frontiers: where trust, humanity, and innovation converge,” and last week saw that convergence in real time. It was great to be in the room where it was happening, but let’s not pretend everyone didn’t have one big thing on their minds: Generative AI. We all want to use AI to disrupt the status quo and vault progress forward — but not at any cost. And nowhere is that more acute than in software development, which has become the epicenter for both AI innovation and anxiety. At Crowdbotics, we live in that epicenter. I had the pleasure of hosting two round tables at the event: "Exploring the Transformative Power of Generative AI – Efficiency, Innovation, and Beyond. " Teams told us they are piloting or investing in Gen AI to grow critical parts of the business, including: Improving the speed of development Improving operational efficiency Modernizing legacy codebases Centralizing company knowledge in AI-aware knowledge bases Driving personalized experiences for customers and prospects Throughout the unscripted, uncensored roundtables, it became evident that while Gen AI's efficiency gains and innovative capabilities are broad, they are also vastly complex — with ethical implications, potential biases, and responsible deployment strategies.   5 Important Questions Executives are asking about AI So what are those questions? Here’s what we overheard in the room and what we made of it. (All names have been withheld to protect the innocent. ) How Can AI Deliver...

Impactful code generation requires the injection of relevant context. These new features accelerate the SDLC with context and specificity.

There’s no shortage of products being launched to improve developer productivity through the use of AI. At Crowdbotics, we've been intensely focused on making the SDLC more efficient through AI and found over and over again that the quality of AI outputs across all phases of the SDLC is dependent on great context. Want to generate a PRD for an enterprise project? You’ll need to provide context about your specific infrastructure, services, vendors, security posture, and more. Want to do impactful codegen and not parlor tricks? You’ll need to provide context about the entire project, including both technical and non-technical requirements.   Our research shows that impactful code generation requires the injection of project-level requirements that AI can leverage to build what you want (not just line-by-line auto-complete). This includes context such as infrastructure, preferred languages, architecture, internal and external services, vendors and more. Today, we’re happy to announce three big new features that accelerate the SDLC with context and specificity. 1. Enterprise Standards First, we’re happy to announce that enterprise customers can now store and reference context relevant to their company, infrastructure, and applications via Enterprise Standards. This information is used by our CodeOps Platform to: Create PRDs specific to your organizational needs Recommend technical solutions based on your existing infrastructure and approved partners Generate code in your preferred languages and frameworks For example, let’s say you are a healthtech company that must maintain HIPAA compliance, is building on Azure using Node and Postgres, and has just procured Stripe...

Crowdbotics' Code Ops develops fast cheap DoD software as if it were a generative AI model tasked to design code. Andrew Salerno-Garthwaite reports.

Crowdbotics founder and CEO, Anand Kulkarni began his company to accelerate the process of software development using artificial intelligence, in a movement the company call Code Ops. The idea behind Code Ops is that users can speed up the process of creating software by using reusable parts, snapping together pre-validated components – a task machine intelligence excels in.   The Crowdbotics machine intelligence has similarities with the generative artificial intelligence of large language models like ChatGTP, but instead of the model predicting character-by-character what comes next in a response, Crowdbotics predicts the next correct component in a software program, choosing from existing elements. Global Defence Technology interviewed Kulkarni to learn about how this approach differs from alternative methods, and how it is being used by the armed services to address defence requirements for information technology with built in security features in a timely manner. Kulkarni reveals: “Most software systems that we want to build, in the real world look like software systems that we have built before ... Once you build it and validate it for a given organisation, you shouldn’t really need to do it again. ” “But despite that, most of the time, when organisations build software – DoD is no exception – they end up reinventing the wheel every time they have: a new base; a new contractor; a new team... So they end up slowing down the process of building software and doing it in a way that’s very inefficient. ” Crowdbotics lets companies and the government...

The good news for organizations is that CodeOps combines AI and human ingenuity to minimize these risks while saving time and money.

Digital assets, including apps and websites, are a must-have for organizations, and those that are innovative, intuitive, and fun to use can go a long way toward building long-lasting customer relationships. Creativity helps businesses stand out in a crowded marketplace, but many need to realize that they don’t need to reinvent the wheel and start the app development process from scratch. In many new app development projects, a significant portion of the required code has already been written — up to 70% is often readily available. This code may originate from open source projects or have been previously developed by developers within the organization. Despite the abundance of existing code, efforts to prioritize code reuse have historically faced challenges. Solutions such as low- or no-code platforms often force disruption and demand new, non-transferable skill sets, contributing to resistance and failure. Many of these solutions also need more technical maturity to deliver on their promises. This is why organizations turn to CodeOps, an AI-driven software development process prioritizing systematic code reuse. This helps teams avoid wasting time reinventing the wheel and, more importantly, significantly reduces the risks associated with writing code from scratch, including: Read on The New Stack: Coding From Scratch Creates New Risks 1. Security.  Software security issues are widespread. According to a Gartner survey, over half of organizations report experiencing software-related security issues within the past six months. The sources of those security issues varied — 42% said open source code, 40% said code in purchased tools, and 38% cited legacy...

Don’t be intimidated to ask for what you want. Here are 10 questions to ask any software vendor and the answers you should look for.

By Cory Hymel, VP of Research Need to work with a software development vendor to create a new app or tool? If you aren’t an expert in coding — or if it’s been a hot minute since you debugged your last syntax error — that can feel a little intimidating. You need to be sure you’re getting efficient, high-quality, scalable and maintainable code. But how can you know if your software development is on point when actual code talk looks, and sounds, like Zapf Dingbats? How can you vet them? Trusting the fate of your software projects to the hands of others doesn’t have to be an exercise in blind faith. It turns out there are some simple questions you can ask that can give you some pretty spot-on insights into how your vendor develops, tests and maintains code. And you won’t need a degree in computer science to figure out whether they can deliver the goods. Read on Built In: 10 Questions to Ask Your Software Vendor — Even If You Don’t Speak Code 10 Questions to Ask Any Software Vendor  Whether you’re a seasoned tech whisperer or someone who thinks Java is just a great place for coffee, these 10 questions are your compass, guiding you to make informed decisions that ensure your venture into software development lands on solid ground. For each one, we’ll share the question to ask, give you some red flags to watch out for, identify an “OK” answer and then share the answer you really want to hear.   Ready?...

As drone delivery becomes more widespread, Drone
Express will lean on Crowdbotics to help it evolve as customer
needs and requirements change and the company begins to
scale.

In an industry still very much in its infancy — drone delivery — Drone Express is a pioneer. The company is one of only five in the U. S. (including Amazon and Google) on track to receive Federal Aviation Administration authorization to deliver goods via drones, with deliveries to start soon in markets in the U. S. including Denver, Dayton, and Winston-Salem. On the tech front, Drone Express is working with Crowdbotics collaborator Microsoft to co-develop in- flight navigation systems using AI and the company's proprietary mesh networking capabilities. For its consumer-facing app, Drone Express turned to Crowdbotics and its revolutionary CodeOps platform, which leverages AI and preexisting modules of written code to expedite software development. "When you build an application, there are so many facets that can require full-stack developers and architects working on the front-end and back-end UI and UX," says Brandon Mabey, Chief Strategy Officer at Drone Express. "But Crowdbotics is a one-stop-shop because of its ecosystem. Reusable code helped us launch an application fairly quickly and not have to build from scratch. " As drone delivery takes off, consumers can access the Drone Express app on Android or iOS devices for a DoorDash- or Instacart-like experience. They can select products from the likes of Kroger or Papa John's, customize their selections, and track their order when it's on the way. While Crowdbotics uses cutting-edge AI to quickly bring apps to market, Drone Express was also drawn to its high level of personal service throughout the development...

The faster you can move from the first qualification call to actual development, the better it will be for your bottom line

If you're in the business of selling custom software solutions, we don’t need to tell you the biggest challenge: translating a client's vision into actionable, technical requirements without getting bogged down in an endless, expensive back-and-forth. The traditional pre-sale flow goes something like this: The client asks for a tool—say, a fancy new global sales dashboard. In the qualification or kick-off call, they throw out a lot of vague terms and big ideas, like "real-time," "integrate with Salesforce,” “localization,” or “consumer-grade. ” You nod, record everything they say, and take it to the team. Then, the gauntlet begins.  BDRs, account reps, solutions architects, and others all spend days, weeks, or months focusing on one thing: translating that collection of vague “wants” into the actionable “must-haves” your developers need to scope — dragging customers through what is possible, and pulling out a decoder ring to understand what they are trying to articulate. It's expensive, it’s tedious, and frankly, it isn’t the best use of your team’s time or brainpower. What You Really Want We all know there’s got to be a better way to scope and sell projects, right? So chances are getting to your ideal pre-sale flow involves some version of the 5 goals below: Slash the cost of sales: Reduce the time and manpower it takes to close each deal. Speed up proposals: Quick turnaround times lead to quicker closes. Nail the scope from the start: Accurate scoping keeps your margins intact. Win more deals: More compelling proposals mean a higher...

The software development landscape has become dangerous. CodeOps is a new and improved way to secure your development process.

The software development landscape has become dangerous.  According to Gartner, attacks across the software development lifecycle have seen triple-digit increases in recent years.   In response, organizations have gravitated toward DevSecOps strategies and principles, many of which aim to bake security protocols into the development process as early as possible. Now, there’s an emerging framework of software development in the same vein as the DevSecOps mentality: CodeOps. For any organization looking to create software products while adhering to the highest security standards, it’s important to know what CodeOps is, how it works and how it contributes to securing the software development lifecycle. Read on Built In: Why Your Company Should Be Using CodeOps How Does CodeOps Secure Software? It uses pre-vetted code modules, saving time and ensuring compliance. It involves using a completely auditable codebase for regular audits to ensure the code: Meets the organization’s internal security guidelines. Doesn’t infringe on anyone’s intellectual property. Doesn’t introduce known security issues. What Is CodeOps? In software development, CodeOps is gaining recognition as a new approach that implements reusable, internally-owned code to streamline the development process. It’s driven by generative AI and modular coding concepts, which expedite the development lifecycle and catalyze innovation through the continual evolution of digital products. Large enterprises and organizations, including the United States Air Force, have already used this methodology to build apps that reach unprecedented speed and innovation. It begins with generative AI, which helps automatically generate code components based on predefined patterns and specifications. This, combined with modular coding concepts, allows developers to...

Accelerate the creation of new apps through code reuse using the programming languages and frameworks of your choosing.

The Crowdbotics platform uses AI to help customers speed up enterprise application development by reusing existing code. The platform implements a new methodology pioneered by Crowdbotics, CodeOps, that starts with an AI generated product requirements document (PRD) and then leverages an AI-based matching process to identify reusable modules of code fulfilling the requirements defined in the PRD. By utilizing this new methodology along with the Crowdbotics platform, customers have been able to realize up to a 65% reduction in the costs associated with building new enterprise applications.   However, up until now, the Crowdbotics platform had one significant limitation with regard to what kinds of apps could be built: language support. When launched earlier this year, the Crowdbotics platform supported the building of front-end apps using JavaScript and the React Native framework. The platform also supported building back-end apps using Python and the Django framework. If you wanted to use alternative language/framework combinations, however, you would not be able to take advantage of the code reuse benefits of the Crowdbotics platform.   Today’s exciting news is that this limitation is gone, and you’re now able to use the Crowdbotics platform to build apps using the language and framework of your choice. Create modules using C# and the . Net Core? No problem! JavaScript and Node. js? Be our guest! Whatever language and framework your team requires, the Crowdbotics platform will help you accelerate productivity. Your team is now able to add code modules to your company’s private catalog regardless of...

Crowdbotics continues to deliver on our vision of offering a new AI-powered approach to software development.

By Anand Kulkarni, founder and CEO of Crowdbotics Crowdbotics continues to deliver on our vision of offering a new AI-powered approach to software development. While most of the attention so far in our industry has been paid to token-based code prediction tools for software generation, Crowdbotics takes a fundamentally different approach with CodeOps, our AI-based approach that accelerates app development with systematic code reuse. It is a different and better way to use AI to build software. Systems that use token-based models to measure consumption are not the right place to start with AI-driven development; the Crowdbotics CodeOps platform takes a different approach, leaving developers with complete control. Crowdbotics' use of AI helps teams plan applications and write requirements, then matches them with existing code, APIs, architectures and other components to fulfill said requirements. We counsel that you use AI to plan requirements based on apps that are similar. We used a large crowdsourced database to stand up a first-of-its-kind model for writing requirements: product requirements document (PRD) AI. Once you know your requirements, you can write code more powerfully with AI. You can use AI to select or create prewritten modules / blocks of code that satisfy your requirements. The platform was designed this way because it mirrors how real software engineers write -- any engineer will tell you that coding is the easiest part of a software project. The hardest thing to get right is knowing and understanding what you're trying to build and how you will get...

The moral imperative to adopt AI isn't just about preventing harm or death; it's about whether we have an obligation to contribute to human well-being if we can.

by Cory Hymel, VP Innovation & Research, Crowdbotics Five years ago, Frank Chen posed a question that has stuck with me every day since. The question was this, “If self-driving cars are 51% safer, are we not morally obligated to adopt them? ”. I’ve posed this question a ton of times over the past five years, and usually, a knee-jerk reaction leads to an interesting debate. What makes this question so great is the knife's edge – it’s not 99% safer, it’s not 70% safer, it’s only 51% safer. To put it into context. The National Highway Safety Administration has reported that in 2022, there were an estimated 42,795 traffic fatalities. 50% of 42,795 is 21,398 people, and 51% is 21,825 people. HackerNoon: Are We Morally Obligated to Adopt AI? That means if self-driving cars are 51% safer, using them would save 427 people’s lives every year. That is about 1. 5 Boeing 777 airplanes full of passengers. Is saving 427 lives a moral argument for adoption? In the five years I’ve been sharing this question, the answers are never simple. They’re always fraught with “what ifs. ” But even if the answers lack clarity, I think the question is incredibly important. In part because it opens a broader — and equally important — debate on the moral imperative of AI adoption across many aspects of our lives and work. Because, after all, avoiding technology that could save lives may be just as ethically problematic as adopting technology too hastily, The Moral Imperative of...

It was truly astonishing in scope — with 6,000 manual switches and 17,468 vacuum tubes, and using 200 kW of electricity — and as the world’s first programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer, it was a game changer.   The excited headlines ENIAC generated back then will feel eerily familiar to anyone watching the current landscape of AI. VentureBeat: Edge AI: The accessible, sustainable future of AI “With the help of lightning-fast computers to do most of the drudgery on problems that have baffled men for many years, today’s equation may be tomorrow’s rocket ship,” blared Popular Science Monthly in April of 1946. “30-Ton Electronic Brain at U. of P. Thinks Faster than Einstein,” reported the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. Cut to today, more than 75 years later, and the Cortex-M4 chip that runs your smart refrigerator is 10,000 times faster than ENIAC — using just 90µA/MHz and a few inches of space. That’s because as computer tech matured, devices specialized to become far more effective and efficient at exactly what they needed to do in a specific, limited, cost-effective application. This is also the that way AI is headed. The specialization of technology Like ENIAC, AI is currently generating a huge buzz of excitement and optimism (and a little anxiety) — particularly as generative AI has taken off over the last year. However, if we want to understand its...

Today, Crowdbotics unveils its vision for CodeOps - a new approach to enterprise software development centered around systematic code reuse.

introducing codeops Over the last 20 years, developers have written more than 2. 8 trillion lines of code. 1 Yet, in today’s fast-paced, constantly evolving business environment, that’s still not enough. Because organizations fail to take advantage of the massive trove of existing code available to them, their need to create new code grows far more rapidly than it can be written. Crowdbotics was built precisely to solve this problem, and to do so, we have pioneered a new approach to enterprise software development: CodeOps. Simply put, CodeOps is a philosophy and methodology centered around systematic code reuse. It’s also a commitment to excellence and foresight in software development. At its core is the underlying principle that code is not disposable; it should be reused as much as possible. This mindset led us to four core tenets of CodeOps: Embrace and extend existing code: Organizations should recognize and utilize the vast repository of existing code as a primary resource. The idea is to prioritize reusing and modularizing this code while treating every project as an opportunity to build upon what already exists. This approach fosters efficiency, reduces redundancy, and accelerates development. Seamless integration with DevOps: CodeOps isn’t a revolution; it’s an evolution that enhances DevOps processes without disruption by leveraging current infrastructure and workflows to ensure a natural and progressive adoption for DevOps practitioners. Balance between AI and human ingenuity: AI plays a crucial role in generating and identifying code, while human creativity augments projects. This balance ensures that AI...

Crowdbotics today officially unveiled its vision for a new approach to enterprise software development, CodeOps, that helps organizations reuse code at scale, saving time and money and reducing risk.

A complement to DevSecOps, CodeOps enables a new way to build enterprise software centered on systematic code reuse – saving time and reducing risk BERKELEY, Calif. - March 12, 2024 - Crowdbotics, pioneer of CodeOps as the new standard methodology for software development, today officially unveiled the company’s vision for a new approach to enterprise software development. CodeOps helps organizations reuse code at scale, saving time and money and reducing risk. More importantly, by leveraging reusable code for duplicated features and functionality, developers can focus on innovative, differentiated code that makes a difference to their organizations.   Blog post: A new standard for app development: CodeOps In 2024, there is an intensified focus on increasing efficiency and productivity. Crowdbotics recognizes that businesses are under tremendous pressure to justify new tech spending while seeking to derive as much value as possible from their existing technology investments. CodeOps is precisely the solution to these challenges. It is both a new methodology and technological approach to solving a challenge that has vexed organizations for decades. By finally delivering on the promise of systematic code reuse, businesses can bring software to market faster and at lower costs than traditional methods. “CodeOps is an emerging movement with several ‘kindred spirit’ companies using similar approaches. For example, GitHub calls it ‘innersourcing,’” said Anand Kulkarni, founder and CEO, Crowdbotics. “One of the exciting things about foundational movements is that they exist independently of any one company. We are thrilled to share our vision today for CodeOps as...

In 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Drs. Tamatha Fenster and Marc Schiffman knew there had to be a better way to connect intensive care unit (ICU) patients with their loved ones. Because the hospitals restricted in-person ICU visits for various reasons, the primary method of communication between patients and families was a phone call or video chat with nurses serving as middlemen controlling a mobile device. Fenster and Schiffman realized that the whole process needed to be more efficient. First, while most nurses were happy to help connect patients and loved ones, it took them away from their day-to-day duties and other patients. In addition, engaging in FaceTime or Zoom video calls proved rather depressing for patients and their families. To combat this, the duo devised a clever solution: a walkie-talkie-like system connected to an app that allowed families to speak to ICU patients with the touch of a button via a speaker attached to their hospital bed. The system was tested across 10 care units at New York Presbyterian, successfully helping dozens of patients and their families. Fast forward to 2024, and what started as a side project to help connect families has turned into a legitimate startup with an eye on transforming patient-family communication: VoiceLove. “Loneliness is heartbreaking,” says VoiceLove CEO Gabriela Pelin . “Being disoriented and isolated makes patients sad, and this impairment delays recovery. But our value proposition is simple: love heals. ” Indeed, physicians have adopted what is known as the "ABCDEF...

Alliance Residential is one of the largest rental residential real estate developers in the U. S. , with active developments and residential communities in 39 markets across 16 states. Like any major real estate developer, Alliance found the process of purchasing high volumes of building materials to be a logistical challenge that often proved both time-consuming and costly. With this backdrop, Alliance turned to Crowdbotics for help building an app that stakeholders could use to quickly and seamlessly purchase the materials they need at pre-negotiated prices discounted for volume. Before choosing Crowdbotics, Alliance vetted several off-the-shelf software solutions but found that none met the specific needs of the construction industry. The company also explored a handful of software development consultants but ultimately chose Crowdbotics for a variety of reasons, including the fact that Crowdbotics’ use of CodeOps — expedited software development using reusable, internally-owned code — could deliver a product it needed at a fraction of the cost. "I'm in the business of buying things, so if I can get a quality product at a good price, that's very attractive," said Mike Brooks, Alliance Residential's vice president of procurement. Now, Alliance Residential has a fully functional app built with complete code that the company owns, allowing users to browse materials such as appliances, floor coverings, windows, cabinets and fixtures at prices negotiated upfront by Brooks and his team. These users (project managers, estimators, subcontractors, architects and real estate developers) can then quickly make purchases without slowing down the construction and...

We’re pleased to announce Crowdbotics has raised $22M in Series A funding, led by Jackson Square Ventures with participation from Pacific West Bank, and our existing investors Homebrew, Harrison Metal, Bee Partners, and Berkeley’s House Fund

We’re pleased to announce Crowdbotics has raised $22M in Series A funding, led by Jackson Square Ventures with participation from Pacific West Bank, and our existing investors Homebrew, Harrison Metal, Bee Partners, and Berkeley’s House Fund. This follows $6M in seed funding. A special thanks to our angel investors James Tamplin, Ryan Petersen, Scott Belsky, and Mark Ayzenshtat, for supporting us since the early days. Why now? We’re seeing a groundswell of enthusiasm for what’s being created here at Crowdbotics. There’s a growing recognition that low-code simply can’t create most of the software that people want to build; serious products need real code. Our approach – letting teams build with real code, directly in Git, using a growing library of prebuilt parts and knowledge – enables creators to actually scale on our platform rather than outgrow it. Something interesting happens when the activation cost of new products starts to approach zero: you enable a wave of innovation from creators and communities who have never built before, solving important problems that Silicon Valley missed. This round will be used to introduce major feature additions to Crowdbotics in 2022, including: hundreds more prefab features and architectures for quick-start building broader design tooling for app layout, data, and workflow modifications enhanced integrations with complementary tools like Figma and Google Cloud Platform a more powerful product management-as-a-service (PMaaS) suite niche feature sets for in-demand sectors like health care, finance, education, tech, media, and Web 3. 0 We’re adding these features to support a faster,...

In today's digital landscape, security isn't just a priority; it's the bedrock of trust and reliability. That's why we're thrilled to announce a significant milestone at Crowdbotics: the attainment of our SOC2 Type I certification. What does this mean for you, our valued clients and partners? It's a testament to our unwavering commitment to data security and privacy. But let's delve deeper into what this accreditation signifies.

What Is SOC Type I? SOC2 (Service Organization Control) Type I is an internationally recognized standard that verifies the effectiveness of a company's security protocols and controls. It's not just a badge we proudly display; it's a rigorous evaluation of our systems and processes. Why It Matters: At its core, Crowdbotics is an AI-powered platform that accelerates software development. It allows users to build apps using the CodeOps philosophy: reusing architectural principles, software elements, and entire modules of code to determine the most effective way to build software. We understand that this also comes with the responsibility of handling sensitive customer data. Achieving SOC2 Type I compliance means: Stringent Security Measures: Our infrastructure, policies, and practices adhere to the highest security standards. Your data is safeguarded with robust protocols at every step. Commitment to Confidentiality: Your privacy is paramount. This accreditation underscores our dedication to maintaining the confidentiality of your information. Reliability and Trust: By meeting SOC2 Type I criteria, we prove our commitment to reliability. You can trust us as a partner in your digital journey. How It Benefits You: Peace of Mind: Rest assured knowing your data is handled with the utmost care and protection. For example, our Assessment AI capability securely scans actual project data to discover areas of duplicative work and create a code reuse roadmap. Compliance Assurance: For businesses operating in regulated industries, our accreditation adds another layer of compliance validation. Enhanced Partnership: Your trust in Crowdbotics grows stronger as we continually invest in fortifying...

BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 10, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Crowdbotics, the leader in helping organizations harness the power of CodeOps, today unveiled new AI capabilities in the Crowdbotics platform to help organizations plan and launch products in a fraction of the time. These new AI capabilities enable teams to create organization-level strategies for systemic code reuse, generate individual application build plans in seconds, and instantly assemble a running application from prebuilt parts.

New Capabilities in Crowdbotics’ Platform Enable Teams to Quickly Plan and Launch Apps Using AI Blog post: A deep dive into Crowdbotics’ new AI features “We are in the middle of a paradigm shift for product creators with Generative AI. Adapting to this new world requires us to redefine the software development lifecycle to be AI-first in planning, verifying, and launching software,” said Anand Kulkarni, founder and CEO, Crowdbotics. “The Crowdbotics platform delivers an efficient process to enable systemic code reuse within your organization using AI. ” The new capabilities in the Crowdbotics platform enable teams to efficiently and securely use AI as part of a code operations (or CodeOps) methodology. At Crowdbotics, we carefully infuse AI throughout the entire software development lifecycle, allowing companies of all sizes to securely accelerate their pace of innovation. Before we dive into the new features, it's essential to understand the problem we’re addressing. Up to a staggering 70% of code written by organizations has been written before. Crowdbotics' new AI capabilities aim to eliminate this redundancy, enabling businesses to focus on genuine innovation. What we’ve launched this week is just the tip of the iceberg.   Crowdbotics' New AI-Powered Features Assessment AI This feature scans project data to identify areas of duplicative work and recommends a code reuse strategy. This helps kickstart the migration to CodeOps to ensure that developers don't waste time rewriting existing code. The resulting assessment flags duplicative efforts, finds opportunities to modularize code and estimates future savings.   PRD AI  Just 12 months ago, it would have been crazy to think you could build most of a new application with just a few lines of text. Today, that’s the reality. PRD AI can generate a comprehensive software Product Requirements Document (PRD) and build plan, including key features, relevant user roles, detailed descriptions and acceptance criteria,...

A great product idea won’t go far unless you have a clear plan and process in place for how you’re going to bring that idea to life.

Developing a new product is no simple task—it requires a clear vision, collaboration across departments, budget allocation, time, and more. A Product Requirements Document (PRD) is a critical component of the product development process that outlines the features, functionality, and goals of your product. A well-defined PRD can help ensure that everyone involved in the product development process is on the same page and that your product meets the needs of your target audience. By following these five tips on how to build an effective PRD, you can ensure that your product meets the needs of your target audience, aligns with your product goals and company vision, and is well-positioned for success. 1. Keep it Lean & Concise Product Requirements Documents shouldn’t be exhaustive, multi-page presentations. They should be simple, lean, and concise. The purpose of these documents is to help every stakeholder quickly understand your vision, your plan, and what you’re asking them to do to help make the product development process a success. Most Product Requirements Documents include the following sections: High-Level Summary/Introduction: This overview box typically includes a project title, owner, contributors, ETA, and project status. Problem/Background: This section lays out the problem you’re trying to solve with the product you intend to build. It may also include background information that provides additional context on the intended users. Solution/Vision: This section describes the solution you intend to offer through your new product. It should align with the problem you outlines in the previous section. You may also...

A business can live or die depending on the tools, workflows, and systems they have in place. Whether it's project management software, communication tools, or data management systems, internal tools are essential for streamlining workflows, reducing errors, and making scalability and growth possible. In this article, we'll help you understand why businesses develop new internal tools, how to know when and if your business should develop one, and what you need to know before you build.

Why More Businesses Are Building Internal Tools Businesses build internal tools for a number of different reasons, but the biggest one is that inefficiency is an expensive problem for most companies. According to market intelligence data provider IDC, operational inefficiency can cost businesses as much as 20-30% of their revenue each year.   Another reason is that as the competition for talent intensifies this year, companies are finding themselves needing to work harder than ever to hire and retain the best people. Innovation, even when it applies to your own internal tools and systems, can help you attract and keep better talent. Regardless of industry, high performers today want to work for companies that give them access to tools that make their jobs easier. A final reason is that businesses have better access to affordable tools that make it possible for them to finally do away with outdated technology and systems that they’ve kept intact for far too long. App development platforms like Crowdbotics have introduced faster, cheaper, and better ways to help people within established companies take an idea and transform it into a functioning app.   Would Your Organization Benefit From a New Tool? 5 Questions You Should Ask How do you know if now is the right time to build a new internal tool for your organization? There are a lot of factors to consider, but thinking about these five questions can help you understand if the benefits will outweigh the costs.   Question 1: Are you...

If you’re like most developers, you don’t have the freedom to spend as much as you want or take as long as you want to bring an app to market. Whether you work for a startup or a large enterprise, you’re likely committed to figuring out how to move fast while keeping costs down. From adopting an MVP mentality to leveraging pre-built components, these five best practices will help you speed up the development process and save you money in the process.

1. Set Your Budget & Timeline Setting a budget and timeline before you start the process of developing your app is crucial. To build efficiently, you need to know exactly how much money you’ll spend and how much time it will take to bring your idea to life.   When setting a timeline, think about the scope of your project, the complexity of the features you want to include, and the availability of your development team. A relatively simple app can be developed in as little as two months of work before you can bring it to market. A much more complex and custom app can take nine months or more to build.   When setting a budget, think about the complexity of your app, the core features you want to include, and the development resources you have on hand. You should also take time to understand how much money your new application will make or save you once it’s live. A simple application can cost as little as $5,000 to build. A complex application with many custom features or compliance requirements can cost $100,000 or more to create.   Want to get a better idea of how much your app will cost to build? Use our free Cost Estimator Tool. 2. Interview End Users Before deciding which features to include in your application, you should consider spending time talking to customers or prospects first. Your goal with these conversations is to better understand the biggest pain points and needs...
